Revival protein shakes support daily activities with a generous 20 grams of protein and about 160 milligrams of soy isoflavones ,,,,a convenient and delicious way to obtain the full nutritional benefits of soy. Getting enough protein is an important part of proper nutrition. The new 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans indicates that adult men and women should consume 0.8 grams of good quality protein per kilogram (or 2.2 pounds) of body weight and that protein should make up 10 – 35% of our total calorie consumption as adults.
Soy protein shakes are made with high quality protein that provides all the essential amino acids in adequate amounts to meet our nutritional needs. Therefore, soy shakes can be a convenient and delicious way to help meet our daily protein needs.
As we age, many of us find it more difficult to do simple, everyday activities like housework, preparing meals, doing laundry, shopping and more. Studies have suggested that this might be due to the natural loss of lean muscle mass as we age.
It is thought that getting enough high quality protein in our diets might help older individuals more easily accomplish their daily tasks. Previous studies have reported that soy protein supports more lean muscle mass in fitness programs, suggesting that the protein in soy protein shakes might support our ability to do normal daily tasks.
A new research study explored this possibility in women over 65 years of age [1]. Nearly 600 women were asked about their daily consumption of legumes and soy foods and about their ability to do a variety of daily tasks, including grooming, housework, preparing meals, doing laundry, going outside, shopping and more.
The results of this study showed that women who ate legumes and soy foods 1 – 3 times per day found it easier to accomplish daily tasks compared to women who ate legumes and soy foods less than 1 time per week. Legume and soy food consumption did not appear to help with more difficult tasks like dressing and washing.
Overall, these results suggest that legumes and soy foods, like soy protein shakes, can be a good source of protein to help make some daily tasks easier for older adults.
It is uncertain from this study, whether the benefits observed were solely due to soy foods or legumes or the mix of legumes and soy foods. Additionally, it is uncertain whether soy protein or isoflavones have independent effects that help make it easier to accomplish some daily tasks.
Therefore, choosing soy foods, like soy protein shakes, that provide adequate amounts of protein, as well as adequate amounts of isoflavones, is the best approach to adding soy to your diet.
