It’s time to take a vacation and go somewhere – anywhere – just to get away for a while.
But for many of us, taking a few days off may not be possible this year. The economy, gas prices, lay offs, etc. have made taking a dream vacation just that – a dream. Or is it?
The answer to your dream vacation may be…day trips! Almost every state has great places to go that are affordable, interesting and fun. Many of these places may only take an hour or two to reach and some of them may even be in your neighborhood or home town.
If you and/or your family like animals, a zoo is the perfect place to see a lot of them (or a few), depending on where you go.
If you like to look at the stars, go to a planetarium. Many nature science centers have programs explaining our solar system. These programs often include a small planetarium showing the many different constellations that make up our Milky Way galaxy.
Nature science centers usually appeal to both children and adults because they offer many different things to see, touch and learn about. Include a picnic in a nearby park with a playground or a walking trail, and you can have a lot of fun without spending a lot of money.
Going to a museum can be educational and fun. There are military museums, art museums, history museums, train museums, ship museums and so many more. A lot of the time, the entrance fee for a museum, especially if it is in a small town, may be minimal or free.
“No man needs a vacation so much as the person who has just had one.” Elbert Hubbard
If it’s summer and you like the beach, seek out a local pool. Be sure to use sunscreen!
If you like exploring, drive up into the mountains (if they are fairly close by) and hike the trails or explore any caves that are open to the public. You can also go to a state or local park and walk the many different trails (some easy and some difficult) that can be found there.
Whatever you decide to do, have a good time doing it. You may not be able to take the vacation you want to, but day trips can be fun and inexpensive. Let’s make those memories good ones!
